At the age of 17, he participated in a local competition for players of 50 overs, where he took a total of 28 wickets in only six matches. In addition, he attended a workshop that taught him how to alter his bowling style from speed to spin. Hasaranga finished the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament with 765 runs, making him the best run-scorer for the Colombo Cricket Club. He played in nine matches throughout the tournament. The announcement that he will be a member of Galle’s team for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament came in March of this year. The Jaffna Stallions selected him in the draft at the beginning of the first season of the Lanka Premier League, which took place in October 2020.
