In the month that followed, Banton was selected to be a member of England’s One Day International (ODI) team for the series that they were going to play against South Africa. The first one-day international match he played for England was against South Africa on February 4, 2020. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Banton was included in a group of 55 players that were selected to begin training on May 29, 2020. These players were selected in preparation for international matches that would commence in England.
Banton was named in England’s 24-man squad on July 9, 2020, and soon after, he began practicing behind closed doors in preparation for the one-day international series against Ireland. During the one-day international series, Banton was included in England’s team on July 27, 2020. After losing the toss on the first day of the Vitality County Championship First Division match between Somerset and Kent at Taunton, Somerset was able to amass 440 for seven thanks to the aggressive centuries of Tom Banton and James Rew.
Rew stroked his way to 114, off 145 deliveries, with 12 fours and three sixes, in a recall of the form that made him one of the most talked about players in Championship cricket last season. Banton added a career-best 133, off 174 balls, with 19 fours and two sixes, while Rew stroked his way to 114. In a total of 42.4 overs, the partnership contributed 205 runs for the fifth wicket. A belting batting surface at the Cooper Associates County Ground was the setting for Tom Lammonby’s 69-run innings earlier in the game. Kent’s seamers struggled to get going on the surface.
An exciting morning session came to a close with Somerset scoring 133 runs against three wickets after 32 overs. Their innings got off to a horrible start when Sean Dickson hit a wide ball from Beyers Swanepoel and edged through to wicketkeeper Harry Finch for a fourth-ball duck. This event caused their innings to get off to a poor start. Lammonby hit three fours in a Swanepoel over, two of which were to a fairly short boundary on the highway side of the stadium. Soon after, Matt Renshaw and Lammonby were making batting seem to be a relaxing activity in the bright weather.

Just after Banton’s stand with Rew reached three figures, he was able to withstand a quick opportunity to backward point off of Stewart during the last session. After putting in a lot of effort to attempt to replicate his early success as a one-day player in red-ball cricket, he finally achieved a ton of 150 balls, which meant a tremendous amount. This was all the good fortune he needed to attain that milestone. In the previous season, Banton only participated in one inning in the Championship tournament, and his only other hundred came in 2022 when he was a replacement for Essex at Chelmsford due to a concussion.
On the first day of Somerset’s County Championship match against Kent, which took place at Taunton, Tom Banton and James Rew combined to lead Somerset to a dominant score of 440 for 7. The partnership for the fifth wicket was 205 runs, with Banton scoring a career-high 133 and Rew adding 114. Together, they contributed to the partnership. Before that, Tom Lammonby hit 69 runs, which helped Somerset overcome an early wicket loss on a ground that was favorable for batting. The aggressive hundreds scored by the duo ensured a substantial total against a bowling attack that was having difficulty against Kent.
