In the hamlet of Hathouda, which is located in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, the Yadav family makes their home. The Bhabha Atomic Research Center was the reason why his father relocated from Ghazipur to Mumbai to find employment there. During that period, Yadav was 10 years old. Surya became interested in the sport as he was having fun in the streets of Varanasi. His father saw his son’s passion for cricket when he was ten years old and enrolled him in a cricket camp at the BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar based on his interest in the sport.
After that, he became a member of the Elf Vengsarkar Academy, managed by Dilip Vengsarkar, and took part in the youth cricket competition in Mumbai. Before receiving his diploma, he received his education at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science. During his time in Mumbai, Suryakumar Yadav was a member of the Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club and played competitive club cricket. During his time in Mumbai, he participated in club cricket for several different clubs, including Shivaji Park Gymkhana Club and Dadar Union Club, in addition to Parsi Gymkhana and the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited franchise.
He made his debut in first-class cricket for the Mumbai cricket team during the Ranji Trophy in 2010–2011, and he scored 73 runs on that occasion. In the following season, 2011–12, he led his team in run scoring with 754 runs in 9 games, including a double century against the Odisha cricket team in the third match of the year. He also led his side in runs scored overall. During the same season, the player who ended up winning the Indian List-A Duleep Trophy scored 100 runs. Throughout the 2013–14 season, he was one of Mumbai’s most prolific scorers.

Not only did he lose his leadership during the Ranji Trophy season of 2014–2015, but the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also removed him from the roster for the 2018–19 season. The MCA selection committee decided to pick him and subsequently appointed him as the competition’s captain for the years 2019–20.
