Having been born on February 25th, 1993, Soumya Sarkar is a cricketer who hails from Bangladesh. He is a right-arm medium-fast bowler and a left-handed batter who mostly plays as an opening batsman. He is also the originator of the “Periscope Shot,” which is a very attractive shot. Furthermore, he has the distinction of being the first batsman in a Twenty20 World Cup competition to knock two sixes in the opening over. Furthermore, he is the second-greatest individual run-scorer for Bangladesh in an ODI inning.
Additionally, Sarkar is a member of the Prime Bank Cricket Club, which competes in the Dhaka Premier Division, the Khulna Division of the National Cricket League, and the Cumilla Warriors, which competes in the Bangladesh Premier League. A Dhaka Dominators team selected him in the draft for the Bangladesh Premier League. Sarkar is a hitter who bats in the top order and was a member of the Under-19 World Cup squads in both year (2010) and year (2012). After mastering Jimmy Peirson of Australia at the Under-19 World Cup in 2012, Sarkar began to get a lot of attention with his performance.
While playing for Khulna Division in the 2010–11 season, he made his debut in the first-class competition against Dhaka Division. As part of the last round of matches in the 2018–19 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, which took place in April 2019, Sarkar made 208 runs without being out while batting for Abahani Limited versus Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club with the team. Not only was it the highest individual total in List A cricket in Bangladesh, but it was also the first time a Bangladeshi batsman had ever scored a double century in List A cricket.
Additionally, Sarkar’s innings included sixteen sixes, which at the time was a record for a List A innings in Bangladesh. Abahani Limited won their 20th Dhaka Premier League championship thanks to his record-breaking innings, which helped drive them to victory. After participating in the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League, Sarkar was selected to be a member of the Rajshahi Kings team in October 2018. As part of the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League, he achieved his best individual score in Twenty20 on December 28, 2019, when he hit 88* against Rajshahi Royals. This was his first score of fifty or more in Twenty20 in the last four years. With a total of 331 runs scored and 12 wickets taken in a total of 12 matches, he enjoyed a prosperous ride in the Big Game Premier League. In November of 2013, Sarkar was selected to be a part of Bangladesh’s Twenty20 squad for a one-time match against New Zealand; however, he did not end up being selected for the final list of players.
Finally, on December 1, 2014, Sarkar made his debut for Bangladesh in a One-Day International match against Zimbabwe. He was a member of the team that led Bangladesh to victory in their home series against Zimbabwe in 2014. During the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Sarkar was a member of Bangladesh’s winning team. Together with Mohammad Kaif and Umar Akmal, he is the holder of the record for the most catches in a single World Cup match, which is four. It was in April of 2015 that Sarkar made his debut for Bangladesh in the Twenty20 International Match against Pakistan.
On April 22, 2015, Sarkar scored his first one-day international hundred and helped Tamim Iqbal add 145 to his score. The first time he played a test match was in April of 2015, against Pakistan. Additionally, Sarkar participated in Bangladesh’s 100th Test match, which resulted in the team’s victory against Sri Lanka on their turf. It was the first time that any player for Bangladesh had ever taken five catches in a single Test match. He scored 61 runs in the first innings of that historic encounter, making him the player with the most catches in a single Test match. In addition, Sarkar established a new record for the most catches that a Bangladeshi player has made during a test innings with four.
In 2019, Sarkar achieved his first century in a test match against New Zealand at Seddon Park, so matching the record set by Tamim Iqbal, who had previously achieved a century in 94 balls against England at Lord’s on several occasions in 2010. The announcement that he will be a part of Bangladesh’s team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup came in April of this year. It was Soumya’s 50th One-Day International (ODI) match, which took place on June 24, 2019, against Afghanistan. The selection of Sarkar to Bangladesh’s team for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, which will take place in Bangladesh, was announced in November 2019.

His performance earned him the title of player of the tournament. In the latter part of the same month, he was selected to be a member of Bangladesh’s team that would compete in the cricket competition at the 2019 South Asian Games. After defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the championship match, the Bangladesh cricket team became the recipient of the gold medal. In July of 2021, he joined the Twenty20 International team that competed against Zimbabwe. After hitting his 1000th Twenty20 International run in the first Twenty20 International, he became just the sixth Bangladeshi batsman to ever achieve 1000 T20I runs. Additionally, he scored 50 runs from 45, which contributed to Bangladesh’s win by eight wickets.
The announcement that he will be a part of Bangladesh’s team for the 2021 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup came in September 2021. The ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in 2022 is another tournament that he will be participating in. In December of 2023, he was selected to be a part of Bangladesh’s team that would be traveling to New Zealand for a white-ball tour. He achieved the greatest individual score by a Bangladeshi batter away from home in one-day internationals with 169 runs, which he scored during the second one-day international. After this, he also set a new record for the highest individual score by an Asian batter in one-day internationals played in New Zealand.
