An indication that a left-arm spinner’s art is on the rise is when he lures a specialized batter forward, confuses him with the draft, and then castles him. This is a sign that his craft is beginning to improve. And the method in which Vihari accomplished this in a significant amount was encouraging to see. And that was on a surface that didn’t provide much of a challenge to the bowlers on the field. During the third day of play on a track that had only seen a total of thirteen wickets fall throughout the previous two days of play, Mulani alone took seven wickets.
Shams Mulani, a slow left-armer from Mumbai, has taken 140 wickets in all domestic first-class matches in India from the beginning of 2022 to the present day. Bowlers who have bowled at least 500 overs over this period have achieved this level of success, and they have done it at the third-best strike rate.
During the shortened Ranji Trophy season of 2021-22, just six games were played, yet they were responsible for a third of those wickets.
The first phase began in February 2022 and went on to include a second phase in June. Being the player who took the most wickets during that season earned Mulani the Madhavrao Scindia Award. If you were to look at things from any angle, you would have to acknowledge that Shams Mulani is the one who makes things happen. He is the quintessential Old Dog of Mumbai Cricket; he is always willing to engage in a fight, but he never does so at the expense of putting his team in jeopardy.
On Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy final itself, Dhawal Kulkarni had supplied a good basis on a Wankhede track that featured varying bounce and enough change to keep the batsmen guessing. However, the true carnage occurred on Day 2 of the tournament. And what do you think? By bringing Aditya Thakare, Akshay Wadkar, and Harsh Dubey back into the hut, Shams Mulani was able to fuel that phase further. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Vidarbha, and it put an end to their hopes of defeating Mumbai’s first-innings total of 224 runs.

The Vidarbha have established a reputation for being able to turn things around during the season. Whenever they have been cornered, they have always responded with a roar. And Mumbai, who had a batting lineup consisting of straw and tissue paper behind them, needed to modify this dynamic to become successful. Kulkarni and Shardul Thakur were bowling in the appropriate channels to cause Vidarbha hitters some problems at the beginning of Day 2, but they were not hitting the ball with enough incisiveness.
It would have been possible for a powerful alliance to corner Mumbai if Aditya Thakare and Yash Rathod had been there with them. Nevertheless, Mulani entered the scene then. He has never failed to be in the picture whenever his team has required his assistance. In addition, he took three crucial wickets in the blink of an eye, which resulted in the home team convincingly winning the game.
He had the skill from the beginning, and he had to provide something. He ended up being the highest wicket-taker of the season in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 when he played only six games and finished up with nine five-wicket hauls and five ten-wicket hauls. Since that time, he has not changed his mind. Mulani has taken 144 wickets throughout the last four seasons, taking an average of 20.5 wickets per game. This is by far the most number of wickets taken by any bowler in Indian domestic cricket. Indeed, this is rather astonishing.
When it came to the Ranji Trophy in 2022-23, Mulani had an outstanding performance. During the season, he ended with 46 wickets from seven matches, averaging an amazing 23.89 wickets per match. Two fifers and four four-wicket hauls were among his accomplishments. Throughout 31 matches, Mulani has amassed 155 wickets at an average of 22.85, thanks in large part to his outstanding performance in the second innings.
