Gaikwad got his first call-up to the Indian cricket team in 2021, when they went on a tour to Sri Lanka. During his first game, which was a One-Day International (ODI) match against Sri Lanka, he demonstrated his batting skills by scoring an innings that brought the game to a successful conclusion. Gaikwad currently holds the record for the most centuries scored by any player in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is twelve, thanks to his knock of 108 runs against Saurashtra in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022–23. Together, Gaikwad’s current colleague from Maharashtra, Ankit Bawne, and the former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa held the record for the most hundreds ever scored in a single game (11 apiece).
It was announced in July 2023 that Gaikwad would be India’s vice-captain for the series against Ireland, which would be led by Jasprit Bumrah, who would be returning. After the series, he finished as the player with the most runs scored, with 77 runs scored from the two matches, with 58 of those runs coming from the second match. Gaikwad was selected to be a member of India’s One-Day International (ODI) team for the first two matches of the series against Australia in September of 2023.
In the opening match of the series, which took place on September 22, he managed to hit 71 runs, which was his first half-century in one-day international cricket. The appointment of Gaikwad as India’s Twenty20 International Captain for the 2022 Asian Games was announced in July of 2023. His performance is the second greatest by any Indian player in the Twenty20 International format, and he became the ninth Indian batter to make a century in the format. His score is the most by any batter against Australia in Twenty20 Internationals, and he also made history by being the first Indian player to make a century against Australia in a Twenty20 International. Gaikwad achieved his first century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on October 2, 2021, as he finished with 101 not out against the Rajasthan Royals in the 2021 competition.
In the finals, which took place on October 15th, Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by a score of 27 runs. Gaikwad contributed to the number of runs scored by CSK by hitting 32 runs off 27 balls.
