He is the second-highest run-scorer for England in one-day internationals, after Eoin Morgan, and the second-highest run-scorer for England in five-day internationals, behind Alastair Cook. With sixteen hundreds, he owns the record for the most one-day international centuries for England. Additionally, he and James Anderson share the world record for the greatest tenth-wicket partnership in Test matches, which is 198. Even though Root has taken 68 wickets in test matches, it is tempting to think of him as a batting all-rounder. Root also bowls off-spin on occasion.
In a match against Derbyshire that took place at Abbeydale Park on July 18, 2007, Root made his debut with the Yorkshire second team. up with Adam Lyth, he made 57 runs and put up a first-wicket partnership of 133. His continuous participation in the academy team earned him the title of player of the tournament, and Yorkshire’s Academy went on to win the ProARCH Trophy in Abu Dhabi. Following Root’s achievements with the second team, he was offered the chance to play for the first team in Yorkshire’s last Pro40 match of the season, which took place at Headingley and was played against Essex.
During Yorkshire’s 187–7 victory, Root was the leading scorer with 63 runs. Root referred to his debut as a “dream come true,” even though his fifty-point score was not enough to be the winning factor for Yorkshire. Following yet another performance worthy of being named man of the series, this time while representing England Under-19 in Bangladesh, Root signed a professional deal with Yorkshire that was for three years. In the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which was held in New Zealand, Root was chosen to represent England. He scored an unbeaten 70 in a win against Hong Kong, which helped England advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. However, England was ultimately eliminated by the West Indies.
As the winter progressed, he was sent to the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy in Adelaide, South Australia, to hone his skills as a cricket player. During the year 2011, Root made his debut in the County Championship against Worcestershire at New Road. This was one of the fifteen matches that he played that year, in addition to making his debut with the England Lions cricket team against Sri Lanka A.

In August, he earned his first hundred in the Championship when playing Sussex at Scarborough. The match that Yorkshire won the County Championship championship in 2014 was one that Root captained, and he was instrumental in the team’s ability to keep the crown the following year. Root became the 655th player to represent England at the Test level when he received his cap from Paul Collingwood, a former all-rounder for England. Root’s achievement became official during the fourth test match against India.
He made 73 runs off of 229 balls, which tied him for the highest score in the game with Kevin Pietersen. He did this by coming in as the number six batsman rather than his regular position as an opener. During the second innings, he scored twenty runs without being out, which enabled England to win the match and achieve their first victory in a test series on Indian soil since the 1984–1985 season. Although he was not needed to bat, Root made his Twenty20 debut in the second match of the series that followed. The series consisted of two matches. The withdrawal of Jonny Bairstow resulted in his inclusion in the one-day international team as well.
Following the triumphant tour of India, Root was elected to remain a member of the Test squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Additionally, he was included in the One-Day International and Twenty20 teams that were announced earlier. Even though he did not bat in the third Twenty20 match, he began the One-Day International series with two half-centuries. He scored 56 runs in the first game, and then he won the game with 79 runs off of 56 balls in the second game. Root made history by being the first batsman in the history of one-day internationals to begin his career with six straight scores of over 30. He concluded the series with 163 runs.
