In addition to being a right-handed hitter, he also bowls leg breaks sometimes and plays in the top rank of the batting order. Denly started his professional cricket career with Kent, where he played for the county’s age group cricket team. After finishing his career with Kent, he moved to Middlesex for three seasons between 2012 and 2014.
In the year 2018, he was awarded the Player of the Year award by the Professional Cricketers’ Association and was also recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the season. Denly is a member of the England cricket team that has competed in Twenty20 International (T20I), One Day International (ODI), and Test format matches. Before falling out of favor with the national selectors, he participated in age-group cricket for England and made 14 one-day outings for the international squad during the years 2009 and 2010. Additionally, he played for England.
He was brought back into the England Test match and one-day teams in 2018, after two seasons of outstanding performances for Kent. He made his debut for England in the Test match in January 2019. In 2004, when he was just 18 years old, he made his debut for the county in the first-class cricket competition against Oxford University. The following year, he played his maiden County Championship match against Gloucestershire.
By the time the 2005 season came to a close, he had received an extension to his contract. At Canterbury, Denly achieved his first century in his professional career in 2007, when he carried his bat for 115 runs without being out of a total of just 199 runs made by Kent versus Hampshire. Following his selection for the England Lions side in July, Denly scored 83 runs off of 90 balls during the match against India. Beginning with a string of poor scores, the 2008 season got off to a sluggish start. On the other hand, he established a new career-high score of 149 against Somerset in Tunbridge Wells, and he went on to finish the season as one of the players who received the highest ratings of the year. Denly has spent multiple English off-seasons, beginning in 2006–2007, playing in Australia in the Sydney Grade Cricket tournament for UTS Balmain, which is now known as Sydney Cricket Club. He has done this to enhance his backfoot play. He rejoined the team for the 2016–17 season, which was his homecoming.
Denly exceeded his previous best score of 149 by recording a score of 199 versus Derbyshire on September 9, 2011. This was his highest score to date. Denly relocated from Kent to Middlesex, freshly elevated, on September 28th, 2011. After spending three seasons with Middlesex, he made his way back to Kent in October 2014. To do so, he terminated his contract with Middlesex one year earlier than expected. He was unable to play consistently throughout his time at Middlesex, scoring “just 1,829 Championship runs” during his tenure with the club and averaging almost 20 runs per inning in his last season with the club. His time at Middlesex was one of the most unpleasant experiences of his life.
Denly achieved his first-ever first-class double century in May 2016, when he reached 206 not out in the first innings of a match against Northamptonshire. This was Denly’s first-ever total surpassing his previous greatest score in the first-class format. After making headlines earlier in the year when he retired not out in a County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby with his wife going into labor unexpectedly early with the couple’s first child, he signed a long-term contract extension in August of 2016. This was after he had made headlines earlier in the year over his retirement.
To raise money for Cancer Research UK and the Professional Cricketers’ Association charitable fund, Denly decided to abstain from drinking alcohol for a whole year from the beginning of 2016. He was successful in generating more than four thousand pounds. Denly further improved his first-class top score on May 21, 2017, when he hit 227 in the second innings of a Championship match against Worcestershire. This occurred after Denly signed a contract extension in August 2016, which continued his streak of success.

However, Worcestershire was able to successfully chase a target of 399 the next day, even though his knock placed Kent on the path to victory. Not only did Denly win the overall Most Valuable Player title for the 2018 domestic season, but he also led the MVP rankings in both the Royal London Cup and the T20 Blast. During the season, he committed to an extension of his contract and established a new record by scoring centuries in both of the one-day events. A record maximum score for Kent with a score of 150 against Glamorgan at Canterbury, and he became the first player in any version of Twenty20 cricket to score a century and take a hat-trick in the same competition against Surrey at The Oval. Both of these accomplishments occurred in two different matches.
Throughout the season, he finished with three centuries in the Championship, a total of 1,729 runs, and a far higher frequency of bowling than in previous years. He took 57 wickets across all forms of the game, including 23 in the County Championship, with an average of 18.5 wickets per game to his credit. After the season, he was selected as the Players’ Player of the Year at the Professional Cricketers Association awards, triumphing over his colleagues Matt Henry and Rory Burns, a batter for Surrey. Additionally, he was summoned into the England squad for the first time since 2010.
