Holder has the distinction of becoming the first West Indian male cricketer to accomplish a hat-trick in a Twenty20 International (T20I), as well as the sixth to reach 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in a single day of competition.
Additionally, he is the second West Indian player, following in the footsteps of Sir Garfield Sobers, to rack up 2500 runs and 150 wickets in the sport of test match cricket. With the West Indies side that triumphed in the Twenty20 World Cup in 2016, Holder was a part of that team. Holder was signed by the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League auction when he was only a few days away from making his debut for the international team in 2013. His base price was twenty thousand dollars.
In the year 2014, Sunrisers purchased him. In addition, the Sunrisers Hyderabad gave him a promotion to the batting position, and they assigned him to bat ahead of the all-rounders Karn Sharma and Parvez Rasool. The Kolkata Knight Riders purchased him at the auction that took place in 2016. In each of the four matches that Holder participated in, he amassed 22 runs at a rate of 5.50 and took two wickets at a rate of 51.50. Throughout the 2019 County Season, the Northamptonshire County Cricket Club has signed Holder. On February 1, 2013, Holder played his first one-day international match against Australia. His first significant performance in the One-Day International format came in the first match against Pakistan in July 2013, when he took four wickets for thirteen runs. However, his effort was overshadowed by a seven-wicket haul by Shahid Afridi of Pakistan, which resulted in West Indies being bowled out for 98 runs.
Holder had a good all-around effort in the third one-day international of the same series. He and Kemar Roach guided their side to a draw by scoring 19 not out of 9 deliveries. Holder’s performance was a catalyst for the team’s success. In January 2014, he made his debut in Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand, and he returned statistics of 2–34 in three overs. Holder’s selection for the Test team came in June of 2014, after his successful performance in one-day internationals.
On June 26, 2014, he played his first test match, which was against New Zealand. During the first innings, he did not secure any wickets, although he bowled economically, resulting in four maidens. By dismissing Ross Taylor for 16 runs during the second innings of the test match, Holder achieved his first wicket in a test match. At the end of the match, he had a score of 2 for 50. In addition, Holder scored 90 runs throughout the match, including his first fifty-run performance in a test match. Despite this, the West Indies dropped the match by a score of 53 runs.
The selectors of the West Indies Cricket Board decided to make him the captain of the national side in the One-Day International format after they dismissed Dwayne Bravo, who had been the captain before. It was at the age of 23 years and 72 days that he became the youngest West Indian captain in history. The announcement that he would be leading the Test team on their trip to Sri Lanka came on September 4, 2015. Not only did he become the second youngest test captain in the history of the West Indies, but he also became the fifteenth youngest test captain in the history of any nation.

He guided his side to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 2015 when they competed against New Zealand and ultimately lost. Holder hit two successive fifties throughout the tournament, both of which were against South Africa and subsequently, India, both of which were considered to be losing causes. Holder let up 104 runs during the match against South Africa, which is the second-worst possible set of bowling numbers in the history of the World Cup. Additionally, he scored a 42 off of 26 balls in their most recent play, which was a quarterfinal match versus New Zealand.
At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, in April 2015, he made his first century in a test match against England, which contributed to the successful completion of the first test match and resulted in a tie. It was announced in September 2015 that Holder will be taking over as captain of the Windies. When he originally took over as captain of the Caribbean team, the team often lacked experienced players like Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels. Ongoing disagreements between the players and the West Indies Cricket Board were the cause of their absence from the game.
