He has accumulated 68 wickets in 14 first-class matches, including a five-wicket haul against Baroda on the first day of a match that Delhi didn’t win because they were unable to bowl Baroda out on the fourth day of the contest. Ishant joined the India Under-19 team on their tour of England in 2006 and Pakistan during the 2006–2007 season. During his time with India, he participated in three youth tests and six youth One Day Internationals.
The Kolkata Knight Riders won the player auction for the Indian Premier League by placing a winning offer of $950,000 on Ishant Sharma. This was because he had a successful performance in Australia in the year 2008. Not a single bowler in the competition received a higher sum of money than this one. As a result of the formal announcement that Ishant would be joining Sussex County Cricket Club for the first two months of the 2018 county season, which will take place from April 4th to June 4th, 2018, he will become the ninth Indian player to represent Sussex.
The fast bowler Munaf Patel was replaced by Sharma in the test squad that was picked for the Bangladesh trip in May of 2007. Sharma was named to the test team and participated in the tour. There, he participated in the second test match for his national team, during which he bowled three overs, including one maiden, and surrendered just five runs without getting a wicket. Later on, he received a request to return for the tour of England that took place in July and August of 2007.
Due to injuries sustained by India’s frontline pacers Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, and Sreesanth, Sharma was given a chance to return to the squad for the third test match that took place during Pakistan’s visit to India by Pakistan in December of 2007. During the third test meeting, which took place in Bangalore, Sharma took five wickets. It was because of his performance that India decided to include him in their team for the trip to Australia.

Sharma did not participate in the Boxing Day Test that took place in Melbourne during the Border–Gavaskar Trophy. This was because India kept their two most important fast bowlers, Zaheer Khan and RP Singh. On the other hand, Sharma was called up to play for India once again in January 2008, this time to take the place of Zaheer Khan, who was injured, in the second test match that was played at the SCG.
Sharma got off to a great start on the opening day of the tournament and was engaged in a contentious decision made by Steve Bucknor. The ruling featured Andrew Symonds nicking the ball to keeper MS Dhoni off of his bowling, but the ball was not out. Although he bowled quite well throughout the match, he did not have a lot of luck. Even though he did not have much success, the management decided to keep him for the third test match, which was taking place in Perth.
On the fourth day of the match, he delivered an excellent spell against the Australian captain Ricky Ponting, which resulted in Ponting’s wicket and contributed to India’s triumph. He caused the batters a lot of grief by taking advantage of the speed and bounce of the WACA track. In the following test match, which was played in Adelaide, he bowled well and amassed two wickets, which left everyone pleased. As the tour of Australia came to a close, he concluded with a strike rate of 101.0, an average of 59.66, and statistics of 6/358.
In the fourth one-day international of the CB Series, which took place against Australia on February 10, 2008, Sharma took four significant wickets. After the contest, he finished with a score of 4/38 and was considered the Man of the contest. On the 18th of February 2008, during the seventh one-day international of the CB series, he took two significant wickets against Australia. As India defeated Australia in the Test series that took place in India in 2008, Ishant was the player who took the most wickets (16), earning him the title of man-of-the-series. India went on to win the series 2-0.
