Although the Deccan Chargers emerged victorious in the competition, Smith did not make an appearance in the knockout rounds. Although the Deccan charges decided to keep him for the 2010 season, he only participated in three matches at that time. Because Mitchell Johnson was unable to participate due to an injury, the Mumbai Indians decided to sign him as a substitute player in the year 2012. During the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on May 6, 2012, he blasted Ben Hilfenhaus to the fence three times in a row, including a six and two consecutive fours. This occurred at a time when the Mumbai Indians needed to score 14 runs off of the final three balls.
The English County side Sussex has been Smith’s team for the last three seasons of his playing career. During the 2008 Twenty20 Cup season, he first signed a contract with Sussex that was just for a limited period. Following his outstanding efforts, including a best score of 72 not out against Hampshire, he signed a contract to become a Kolpak player for two and a half years. During the same season, Smith was also a member of the Sussex Sussex Pro40 team. Through his participation in seven of the eight matches, Sussex was able to win the Division One championship.
