Muscat is where he spent his childhood. After moving to Dubai in 2010, he began his studies at a university, where he majored in civil engineering.
After finishing his degree, he decided to go back to Oman instead of accepting an invitation to practice with the national cricket team of the United Arab Emirates. In the year 2021, Ilyas discovered a tumor on the bone of his ankle. Not only was it removed surgically and determined to be benign, but it also needed a period of rehabilitation that lasted for eighteen months. In the Twenty20 International (T20I) match that took place on November 21, 2015, Ilyas made his debut for Oman against Hong Kong.

In the last match of the tournament, which took place on April 27, 2019, Ilyas won his first One-Day International for Oman. Through his performance in six matches, he amassed 168 runs, making him the highest run-scorer for Oman in the tournament. It was announced in September 2019 that he would be receiving the position of vice-captain of Oman’s team for the 2019 ICC Twenty20 World Cup Qualifier event. The International Cricket Council (ICC) selected him as the player to keep an eye on in Oman’s lineup before the competition began.
His appointment as vice-captain of Oman’s team for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, which will take place in Bangladesh, was announced in November 2019. Ilyas hit an undefeated 109 runs from 108 balls during the match against Nepal that took place on February 9, 2020, as part of the tournament for the Nepal Tri-Nation Series. For Oman, it was the first century scored by a batsman in one-day international cricket. Ilyas achieved his second century in as many matches over the next two days when he scored 105 runs against the United States of America.
Throughout the Twenty20 World Cup 2024, England crushed Oman by bowling them out for 47 runs and chasing the goal inside four overs. Aqib Ilyas, the captain of Oman, blamed the loss on the difficulties that their top order had in batting and the fact that they had a tough time against England’s fast bowlers. Adil Rashid of England performed well, taking four wickets for 11 runs, while Jos Buttler’s aggressive 24 runs guaranteed that England won the match in a short amount of time.
When a doctor who was holding his X-rays and CAT scan findings gave the news to him that the severe pain he was experiencing in his left ankle was caused by a malignant tumor, the 31-year-old who is taking over the role of national captain for the first time vividly recalls the moment. It was a terrifying experience. He tells his experience to The Indian Express in an exclusive interview that takes place before Oman’s match against Namibia. “I’d gone numb,” he shares with the publication.

For Oman to be successful in their match against Australia in Barbados, they have been instructed to disregard the names that appear on the opposing squad sheet. However, skipper Aqib Ilyas is certain that his team can attack Australia with spin. In a bullish press conference held before the match, Ilyas insisted that it was essential for Oman to approach the match in the same manner as any other and not allow themselves to be intimidated by Australia. Australia is attempting to become the first team to hold global trophies in all three formats, following their success in the World Test Championship (WTC) and the One-Day International World Cup in the previous year.
Ilyas made it quite clear that this was not to be seen as a lack of respect; rather, it was a strategy to provide Oman with the impression that they are capable of competing against a great team. In their last match at Kensington Oval, which was a low-scoring battle against Namibia and ended in a loss on a Super Over, Oman already had a game under their current belt. Even though it seemed to be better for batting during the daytime, Scotland put up a good opening stand against England before the rain hit, and although a new pitch was scheduled for the Australia game, that was a challenging surface that gave inconsistent bounce and spin.
