Having been born on October 4, 1994, Aiden Kyle Markram is a South African cricketer who now serves as the captain of the South Africa national cricket team in Twenty20 International cricket. Before that, he was the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. It was under Markram’s leadership that the South African under-19 cricket side triumphed in the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
The South African Cricket Annual for 2018 recognized him as one of the five “Cricketers of the Year” in the country. Former captain and batsman Graeme Smith expressed his belief that Markram had the potential to become the captain of South Africa in the future. It was in September 2017 that he made his debut for South Africa on the international stage. As of now, he is serving as the captain of Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a team that began competing in the SA20 league in 2022 and went on to win the cup in both 2023 and 2024.
In the match against South Western Districts that took place on October 9, 2014, Markram made his maiden appearance for the Northern cricket team. The Northern cricket team selected him to be a part of their squad for the 2015 Africa Twenty20 Cup. During the whole year of 2016, Markram played for Walkden as a club professional in the Bolton Cricket League. At the annual awards ceremony held by Cricket South Africa in May of 2017, Markram was honored with the title of Domestic Newcomer of the Year.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Stars included him on their roster for the first season of the Twenty20 Global League, which took place in August 2017. Markram inked a contract with Hampshire County Cricket Club in March 2019, committing to playing for them as a foreign player for the first portion of the season. Markram contributed to the Titans’ victory in the 2018–19 Momentum One Day Cup by scoring 127 runs in the tournament’s championship match, which took place later in the same month. The Paarl Rocks club that will compete in the 2019 Mzansi Super League competition decided to include Markram in their roster in September of this year.
The Northern announced his inclusion in their team in April 2021, well in advance of the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa. Markram was selected to be a member of South Africa’s team for the three-Test series that will be played in India in August 2019. In the first two matches of this series, Markram had a difficult time but managed to bag a pair in the second test. However, he was unable to participate in the third test because he suffered an injury to his wrist. As a result of this series, more issues were raised over Markram’s performances abroad. He averaged only 10.50 in four away tests, all of which were played in the subcontinent.
Markram was honored with a spot in South Africa’s team for the upcoming four-test home series against England, which was announced in December 2019. During the first test match, which took place in Centurion, South Africa defeated England by a score of 107 runs. He scored 20 runs in the first innings and 2 runs in the second innings. However, Markram was unable to participate in the remaining games of the series because he fractured his finger.
Markram was selected to be a member of South Africa’s Test team for the series that they intend to play against Pakistan in January 2021. In the initial exam, Markram gave a patient a score of 74, which was on the lower end of the scale.
