The Netherlands were able to qualify for the World Cup in India later that year because of de Leede’s first-ever five-wicket haul in one-day international cricket, which he achieved in July 2023. He finished with stats of 5/52 and scored his first one-day international century against Scotland in the World Cup Qualifier. He also hit four sixes in the span of two overs. His all-around feats and heroics occurred in a life-or-death match against Scotland, when both the Dutch and Scottish teams were vying for the last slot to qualify for the World Cup in India. His performance was the deciding factor in whether or not they would qualify.
His performance earned him the title of Player of the Match. Due to his 5/52, Scotland was only able to score 277 runs, and the Netherlands needed to chase down the goal of 278 runs within 44 overs to secure a spot in the World Cup. This was necessary for the Netherlands to surpass Scotland’s net run rate and secure their spot. At a crucial point for the Dutch, Bas de Leede stepped into the batting lineup at the number four position. This was particularly because they were keeping in mind the objective that they needed to pursue.
After just 92 deliveries, he hit a quickfire 123, which provided the Dutch team with a ray of optimism in their attempt to chase down runs in a match that they had to win. At the same moment when the Dutch were on the verge of achieving triumph, de Leede was defeated. Following in the footsteps of Viv Richards, Paul Collingwood, and Rohan Mustafa, he ultimately succeeded in being the first Dutch cricketer and the fourth player in the globe in men’s one-day internationals to score a century and take a fifer in the same one-day international match.
He was also the only player in the history of one-day internationals to accomplish the feat of taking a fifer and scoring 120 runs in the same match. It was also his first time competing in the World Cup, and he was selected to be a part of the Dutch team that will compete in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Following his return of figures of 4/62 in his team’s first World Cup match against Pakistan, he went on to make 67 runs with the bat, including a partnership of 70 runs with Vikramjit Singh, even though his team was ultimately unsuccessful.

Bas de Leede became the eighth father-son combo to compete in World Cups, joining his father Tim, who took part in the tournament in 1996, 2003, and 2007. Tim de Leede also competed in the World Cup in 2007. During the encounter against Pakistan, Bas de Leede established a significant milestone by being the first player in the history of one-day internationals to accomplish the remarkable feat of scoring fifty or more runs and capturing five wickets in a row.
It was also the first time that a father and son team had ever achieved the achievement of taking four wickets in a World Cup competition. He did this by matching the milestone that his father Tim had accomplished, which was to take four wickets in a World Cup contest. In addition, he became the fourth player in the history of the World Cup to have scored more than sixty runs and to have taken four wickets in the same World Cup match. The other three players who have accomplished this feat are Duncan Fletcher, Feiko Kloppenburg, and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
De Leede set a new record for the most runs allowed by a bowler in a One-Day International match when he returned with statistics of 2/115 in his quota of 10 overs during the Netherlands’ group stage match against Australia in October 2023. As a consequence of a late attack by Australian middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell, who braced his way to hit the quickest-ever century in the history of the Cricket World Cup, which came off of only 40 deliveries, his bowling numbers were very costly.
