In preparation for the Vitality Blast this summer, Durham has recruited Australian left-arm fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis. Dwarshuis will be playing for Durham instead of Scott Boland, who suffered a season-ending injury to his plantar fascia after appearing in only one Championship match.
While playing for Chester-le-Street, Dwarshuis had a productive Big Bash League season with the Sydney Sixers, when he took 17 wickets (including a match-winning 5 for 21 against Brisbane Heat) and was named the team’s best bowler. In 2020 and 2021, he was an integral part of the Sixers’ championship teams, and he took 24 wickets in the second season.
He has made three Twenty20 International appearances for Australia, taking five wickets at a 22.40 average, in 2022–23 matches against Pakistan and India. In addition to his 2021 Vitality Blast appearance with Worcestershire, he played for Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 Indian Premier League.”We are thrilled to have Ben on board. He has an excellent record with the Sydney Sixers and is consistently among the top BBL wicket-takers. His white ball cricket talents are also top-notch.
With Friday’s 39-run win against Brisbane Heat on the Gold Coast, the Sydney Sixers secured the right to host the Big Bash League (BBL) final, which got underway on Saturday. Batting first, the Sixers were led to a score of 152-8 in 20 overs by a remarkable 94-run partnership between skipper Moises Henriques (59) and opener Daniel Hughes (42). After a resounding 39-run triumph against Brisbane Heat at Queensland’s Carrara Oval on Friday, the Sydney Sixers advanced to Friday’s Big Bash League (BBL) final. The Sixers reached 152-8 in 20 overs after batting thanks to a brilliant partnership between opener Daniel Hughes (42) and captain Moises Henriques (59), which contributed 94 runs.

Taking five wickets in December’s two Twenty20 Internationals for Australia against India, Dwarshuis has been in fine wicket-taking form since making his way back to the BBL. He stressed that his experience and outstanding achievements in India, a T20 cricket powerhouse, were pivotal to his success in the BBL Sixers will play host to the final on January 24 at the world-famous Sydney Cricket Ground. Notably, not a single one of their players made the tournament roster. Instead of seeing this as a negative, Dwarshuis pointed out that it shows how captain Moises Henriques and coach Greg Shipperd have created a culture.
Henriques and Hughes put the Sixers up for victory in the Qualifier match between the best two teams from the season with a third-wicket stand of 94 runs. In their last encounter, the duo had spurred the Sixers to a miraculous three-wicket triumph against Perth Scorchers, which moved them into second place. In advantageous bowling conditions, the disciplined quicks from the Sixers were outstanding. Dwarshuis grabbed 5 for 21, while all-rounder Jack Edwards finished with two wickets, one of which was a spectacular one-handed return catch.
