After making his debut in the Indian Premier League with Gujarat Lions in 2017, he was recognized as the “Emerging player of the season” after his performance. He received his first call-up to the Indian national squad in 2017, when they played Zimbabwe in a Twenty20 International series.
Thampi became the bowler to have the worst bowling period in an Indian Premier League match on May 17, 2018, when he was playing for SRH and gave 70 runs in four overs against RCB. This record remained in place until 2024 when Mohit Sharma overtook him with a spell of 73 runs while playing for Gujarat Titans against Delhi Capitals on the same day. On September 11th, 1993, Basil Thampi was born to his parents, N.M. Thampi and Lisy Thampi. He tied the knot with Sneha Roy on July 4th, 2022.
On February 6, 2015, Thampi joined Kerala for the first time in a first-class match during the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. As a result of his inclusion in the 16-man one-day squad for the tri-series against the hosts South Africa A and Australia A side, he received his first call-up to the India A team in June of 2017. Before their One-Day International (ODI) series against India and five ODIs against New Zealand A, he was selected to be a member of the Board President’s XI and India A teams in October of 2017. These squads were preparing for their match against New Zealand.

He was selected to be a member of the South Zone’s squad for the 2022-23 Duleep Trophy in August 2022. In February of 2017, the Gujarat Lions side purchased him to participate in the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) for a cost of ₹85 lakhs. His performance throughout the season earned him the “Emerging Player Award” after he took 11 wickets in 12 matches. His purchase by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 Indian Premier League auction took place in January of that year.
Because he allowed Royal Challengers Bangalore to score 70 runs in only four overs, he bowled the most costly spell in the history of the Indian Premier League in 2018. The Mumbai Indians were the ones who purchased him during the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League season, which took place in February of that year. During the four-match Test series that the Indian team played against Australia in February and March of 2017, Thampi was responsible for bowling the net for the squad.
In November 2017, he made his only outing with the Indian national cricket squad. Even though he was a member of India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad, he did not participate in the series that they played against Sri Lanka. But he participated in several matches with the India A squad. As a bowler, Thampi is recognized for routinely delivering yorkers and bowling at speeds that are more than 140 kilometers per hour. Tinu Yohannan, a former fast bowler for India and the current bowling coach for Kerala referred to Thampi as “athletic” and “quite strong.” He also said, “He is very deceptive.”
He possesses a round-arm motion that allows him to get the ball moving in the right direction. He can play the old ball backward. According to what Thampi has said, he “got [his] yorkers from tennis ball golf.”For a considerable amount of time, Thampi and Warrier had been a part of one of the most powerful new ball partnerships in Indian cricket. The departure of Warrier to pursue his career in Tamil Nadu resulted in Thampi being just half of the bowler he had been before. Thampi, who was in charge of the attack, had a difficult time and was unable to make an impression with the new ball for Kerala.

Even though Basil Thampi was required to spend a significant portion of the day patrolling the ropes, Captain Sanju Samson did not call him to bowl until after the tea break. Under the leadership of Shahbaz Ahmed, the Bengal lower order was able to frustrate Kerala during the post-lunch session by pursuing a massive goal of 449. Shahbaz Ahmed (80) and Karan Lal (40) scored 83 quick runs during their seventh-wicket partnership. They treated the spinners from Kerala with contempt, which forced Sanju to switch to his quicker bowler.
The response from Thampi was impressive, as he broke through the defense of Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal (13), and then, in the next over, he ran out Akash Deep (1) with a stunning pickup and toss from the middle of the field. After that, a pumped-up Thampi brought the Bengal innings to a close by catching Shahbaz Ahmed in the air and delivering the catch to Rohan Kunnummal at the deep square leg fence. Thampi managed to put a stop to Bengal’s valiant pursuit by just sixteen deliveries, resulting in a victory for Kerala by 109 runs.
