It was on December 26, 2019, that he made his debut for South Africa in a test match game against England. Within March in the year 2020, Cricket South Africa presented him with a national contract in preparation for the 2020–21 season. In the inaugural one-day international match, which took place in April 2021 against Pakistan, van der Dussen achieved his maiden century in an ODI to the tune of 123 not out. Additionally, he became the oldest cricketer for South Africa to hit his first century in a one-day international match when he did so at the age of 32 years and 54 days.
In September of 2021, van der Dussen was selected to be a member of South Africa’s team that will compete in the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World League. After missing out on important series in the recent past, Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton are both harboring the hope that the SA20 will serve as a springboard to national selection. With Rickelton topping the run charts with scores of 87 and 98 from the first two games of the SA20, and van der Dussen hammering a 50-ball 104 over the weekend, the combination has been the first to get off to a strong start at the SA20.
