In addition to competing in the international badminton tournament, Chamika Karunaratne won the junior national championship in javelin throw a few years ago. His father, Louie Karunaratne, as well as his brothers Dinuka, Niluka, and Diluka, are all now competing at the professional level in badminton. In the first round of the men’s singles competition at the Sri Lankan Badminton Nationals, which took place in February 2021, he participated with his older brother, Niluka Karunaratne, who is the best badminton player in Sri Lanka.
The three-member committee that was appointed by Sri Lanka Cricket concluded that Chamika was found guilty of lighting an oil lamp on Lord Ganesha at the hotel where he stayed during the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. As a result, he was fined US$5,000, which is equivalent to Sri Lanka Rupees 1.8 million, and he was also reprimanded with a hefty one-year suspension from all forms of cricket. Both of these punishments were handed down in November 2022.
It turned out that Chamika had neglected to watch over the incense sticks, which resulted in an increased risk of fire and a potential threat of a fire breaking out on the grounds of the hotel. At a casino in Brisbane, only a few hours before Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 World Cup match against Afghanistan, he was also said to have been involved in an argument and to have engaged in heated discussions with an outsider.
