Before joining Cape Cobras, he had previously played for the Warriors and Eastern Province. He now plays for Cape Cobras at the domestic level.
In October of 2006, when Parnell was just seventeen years old, he made his debut in the first-class cricket competition for Eastern Province. He scored 17 runs and took one wicket in the match against South Western Districts. He got a hat-trick against Western Province in just his fifth first-class encounter, and he achieved figures of four for seven in his second first-class play. In addition, he bowled all three batsmen in his first-class match against Western Province. According to one account, he was “the most talked about cricketer to hit the first-class scene for some time.”
Both the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola U19 Player of the Tournament and the CSA U19 Cricketer of the Year were most recently bestowed to Parnell in the year 2008, while he was playing for Eastern Province. In February of 2022, Parnell was awarded the position of captain of Western Province for the CSA Twenty20 Challenge that would take place in 2021–2022. Kent County Cricket Club decided to replace Stuart Clark with Parnell at the beginning of the 2009 season by signing him as an overseas player on a six-week contract. Parnell was a replacement for Clark.
In the first innings of his county debut match against Essex, he took four wickets and seventy-eight runs. In the second innings, he top-scored with 69, which was his first-ever fifty in a first-class competition. He went on to surpass this total in Kent’s subsequent County championship encounter against Glamorgan, when he scored ninety runs in an innings. Parnell left Kent to accompany South Africa in preparation for the World Twenty20 competition in 2009, but he came back for an additional five weeks after the event was over.

Even though Parnell was returning to South Africa after his second stint, Cricket South Africa permitted him to return to Kent, and he played for the county on the day that the tournament finally reached its conclusion. Parnell was a member of the Sussex County Cricket Club for the second half of the season in 2011, even though “he struggled for fitness and form” throughout his time with the county even though he played for them. In 2015, he participated in eight matches for Glamorgan during the group rounds of the NatWest Twenty20 Blast. After that, he joined South Africa for their tour of Bangladesh.
Due to a groin ailment, Parnell was unable to participate in the first two of the 10 matches that he had expected to play for Glamorgan. Parnell returned to Kent in April of 2017, and he played for the team for the first half of the 2017 season. Before South Africa started their tour of England in May, he was available for the opening weeks of the 2017 County Championship and the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup fixtures. He was also available for the other matches in the series. To participate in the 2018 season, Parnell signed a contract with Worcestershire CCC as an overseas player.
Wayne played a significant part in the club’s season, which culminated in the Worcestershire Rapids winning their first-ever Vitality T20 Blast Trophy at Edgbaston. The Rapids achieved victory on the day of the finals, after defeating Lancashire Lightning and Sussex Sharks in the semi-final and final, respectively. Wayne’s contributions were vital in the club’s triumph. Because Parnell signed a Kolpak agreement with Worcestershire in September 2018, he is no longer eligible to participate in international competitive cricket.
Following the elimination of the Kolpak status, Worcestershire decided to let him go after the 2020 season. As a player from another country, he was selected by Northamptonshire for the 2021 season. In his second encounter for the team, which was against Yorkshire, he got 10 wickets. The Western Province’s squad was selected for the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa, and he was given a spot on the team in April of that year.

During the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Delhi Daredevils were able to purchase Parnell via an auction. They were successful in outbidding the Deccan Chargers since they were interested in his services. He was signed for a price that was far more than his reserve price that was established at the beginning of the auction. As a result, he became the third most-paid South African cricketer in the competition; nevertheless, he did not play any matches for Delhi throughout the season. The next year, Parnell returned to Delhi to play for the Daredevils during the 2014 season. Before that, he had previously played for Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League from 2011 to 2013.
After a rave party that he was attending in a Mumbai neighborhood was raided in 2012, he was one of the ninety persons who were held by the police. He was doing so while he was playing for Pune. On following occasions, Parnell made an appearance in court and was granted bail on accusations relating to narcotics. Even though Parnell was a member of the South African team that competed in the World Twenty20 tournament in India in 2014, he had to make an additional appearance in the courtroom for procedural matters. However, Parnell said that he had not used any drugs at any time.
