One of Markande’s hometowns is Patiala. During his time at Yadavindra Public School, he participated in the school’s cricket squad and was a student there. In February 2019, he made his debut for the India cricket team on the international stage. On January 14, 2018, Markande made his debut for Punjab in the Twenty20 competition inside the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the 2017–18 season. In January of 2018, Mumbai Indians purchased him at the 2018 Indian Premier League auction.

The announcement that he will be a member of India’s squad for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup came in December of 2018. He was selected to be a member of India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series that they were going to play against Australia in February 2019. On February 24, 2019, he made his debut for India in a Twenty20 International match against Australia.
