It was announced in November 2017 that Curran would be joining England’s Test team to take the position of Steven Finn for the Ashes series that would be played in Australia. At the beginning of the fourth test, which began at the MCG on Boxing Day, Curran was picked as a substitute for the injured Craig Overton, which resulted in him making his debut in a formal test match. By catching David Warner at mid-on for 99 runs, he was able to remove him during his first test match.
The television replays, on the other hand, showed that Curran had overstepped, and a no-ball was signaled. In the end, Warner came back to finish his century, and Curran concluded the day without taking any wickets. In the last four years, he became the third England bowler, following in the footsteps of Ben Stokes and Mark Wood, to lose out on a first-ever wicket in a test match due to a no-ball. With Steve Smith, he took his maiden wicket in a test match. For the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Curran has been selected to be a member of England’s team.
However, he was one of two players, along with Liam Dawson, who did not participate in the event, which ultimately resulted in England winning the competition. Curran was placed in England’s 24-man squad on July 9, 2020, making him eligible to begin practicing behind closed doors for the one-day international series against Ireland.
