It was largely due to his contributions that Jamaica was able to get to the final of the Regional Super50 in 2016–2017. During the semi-final match against Trinidad and Tobago, he scored 95 runs off of 45 balls (including 9 sixes and 6 fours), and he also took 5-36. Both of these efforts were career-bests in List A, which led to his being awarded man-of-the-match. Following that, the Jamaica Tallawahs chose him in the sixth round of the player draft for the Caribbean Premier League in 2017.
In October of 2018, Cricket West Indies (CWI) presented him with a contract to play white-ball cricket for the 2018–19 season. The announcement that he will be leading Jamaica’s team in the 2019–20 Regional Super50 event came in October of this year. With a total of 412 runs scored throughout eight matches, he was Jamaica’s best run scorer who participated in the tournament. In the aftermath of the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League, he was selected to be a member of the Dhaka Dynamites team’s roster in October of 2018.
The Jamaica Tallawahs announced in July 2020 that he will be a member of their roster for the Caribbean Premier League in 2020. Peshawar Zalmi signed him in April 2021 so that he could participate in the postponed matches that were occurring in the 2021 Pakistan Super League. His selection to play for the Kandy Warriors in the 2021 Lanka Premier League came about as a result of the players’ draft that took place in November of that year.
In the second match of the tri-series, he played his first One-Day International (ODI) match, which was against Sri Lanka. In the Twenty20 International (T20I) match that took place on March 26, 2017, he made his debut for the West Indies by playing against Pakistan. In February 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) selected Powell as one of the 10 players to keep an eye on in advance of the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier event.

After the end of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier campaign, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Powell was the emerging star of the West Indies team. He was given the role of captain of the One-Day International (ODI) team of the West Indies back in December 2018, while they were on tour in Bangladesh. Powell took over as captain of the West Indies Twenty20 International team in 2023, succeeding Nicholas Pooran in that role. This came following the team’s dismal performance at the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in 2022.
With a score of 26 off of 13 balls, Powell was a significant contribution to the Rajasthan Royals’ subsequent scoring. In the seventeenth over, he came into his own when he ripped apart Narine for four and two back-to-back sixes in a 16-run over that left Royals needing 46 off the final three. He did this in all three of the overs that followed. In the end, they were able to win the match off the last ball when Jos Buttler, who had scored his second century of the tournament, hit Varun Chakravarthy into the leg side with the scores tied.
There have been few chances available, even though Powell was one of the Royals’ big-ticket auction purchases, which cost 7.4 crore Indian rupees. The game that took place on Tuesday at Eden Gardens was just his second time having the opportunity to bat this season; yet, he was full of admiration for the management of the squad. The most recent match between his team and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) was a particularly good example of his hitting ability.
Where he demonstrated his talent by scoring a remarkable first Twenty20 century in just 49 balls, which included thirteen boundaries and six towering sixes. However, his performance was overshadowed by Jos Buttler’s scintillating ton in a closely contested match that ultimately resulted in Rajasthan securing a thrilling two-wicket victory. Discussions that took place after the match revealed an intriguing possibility about Narine’s countryman.
