It was on January 12, 2011, against Australia in Adelaide that Woakes made his debut in the International Twenty20 competition. After opening the bowling, he got figures of 1/34 and then went on to score the three runs that won the game. During the tour, he participated in all of the one-day matches, and in his second One Day International, he achieved a figure of 6/45. In 2012, Woakes made his comeback to the England team lineup during a one-day international series against South Africa. He continued to be a part of the one-day squad for the rest of the year, taking part in matches against India and New Zealand.
During the last test match of the 2013 Ashes series, Woakes made his debut in a test match against Australia. He performed very well, taking 1/96 in the first innings. Following his selection for the teams that would play against Sri Lanka and India, Woakes made his debut in the summer of 2014 during the third test match against India. He was a crucial member of England’s one-day international team, appearing in all four matches, and he was chosen for the one-day international squad that undertook a tour to Sri Lanka before the end of 2014.
The fact that England’s senior bowlers Stuart Broad and James Anderson were both sidelined with injuries meant that Woakes was given the responsibility of bowling with the new ball.ESPNcricinfo considered his bowling effort in the fifth match of the series to be among the top one-day international bowling performances of the year. He took statistics of 6/47 during that match. Even though he was a member of the England team that competed in the Cricket World Cup in 2015, he was unable to participate in England’s last match of the tournament due to an injury.
Following his injury, Woakes made his comeback for the One-Day International series against Australia and Pakistan, as well as the Test team’s match against South Africa in the 2015–2016 season. An unbroken 95 runs was his greatest one-day international score, which he achieved on June 21, 2016, when he played Sri Lanka in the inaugural one-day international. There is a record that he shares with another Englishman named Sam Curran for having the greatest one-day international score by a player ranked eighth or below in the history of one-day internationals.
It was at Lord’s in August 2018 that he achieved his maiden century in a test match against India (137 not out). This was the same field where he had achieved his best match stats with the ball two years earlier when he scored 11/102 against Pakistan. These accomplishments earned him a spot on both Lord’s honors boards, making him one of just 10 players to accomplish this feat. Furthermore, he was the sixth player to accomplish this milestone by taking ten wickets in a single match.
