It was on May 12, 2007, against Bangladesh that he made his debut for India in a one-day international. It was a very good start for him, as he took three wickets in his first game. He was almost as brilliant in the second one-day international match against Ireland, taking three wickets. In April 2008, he made his comeback to the test match after a two-year absence. In the match against South Africa, he grabbed two wickets and 66 runs (including the wickets of opener Neil McKenzie and AB de Villiers).

Not only did he come in at number 9 in the first innings of his maiden County Championship encounter against Worcestershire, but he also claimed a total of eight wickets throughout the match.

Additionally, he was a part of the Indian team that finished first in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. It had been four years since he had played his third Test match, which was against England in Nagpur in December of 2012. The hosts had picked four spinners, including Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, rookie Ravindra Jadeja, and Chawla. He returned to play his third test match. The first inning was a 4/69 performance for Chawla.
In August of 2013, Chawla made his comeback to the English county cricket scene by joining Somerset as their foreign player for the last five weeks of the season. KXIP purchased him for a sum of $900,000 during the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League.
