He is well-known for his fervent and violent celebrations after taking wickets, and he has often attracted parallels between the two. It was on May 1, 2021, during the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL), when the Rajasthan Royals decided to recruit him as a replacement for Liam Livingstone. For the 2024 Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians paid ₹5 crores to get the services of Gerald Coetzee. The addition of Coetzee to the roster of the Texas Super Kings for the first season of Major League Cricket took place in June of 2023.
In June 2022, Coetzee was selected to be a member of South Africa’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their tour of England, during which they would compete against the cricket teams of England and Ireland. His selection to the South African Test team for the series against the West Indies took place in February of 2023. On February 28, 2023, he played his first test match, which was against the West Indies.
In March of 2023, he was considered for inclusion in the One Day International (ODI) team that South Africa would use for their series against the West Indies. He got three wickets in the second one-day international of the series, which took place on March 18, 2023, in East London. This was his first one-day international. As a result of his inclusion in South Africa’s team for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which took place in September 2023, he participated in his first World Cup competition at the age of 23.
Because of the injuries that veteran fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala were experiencing, he was able to make his way into the South African team and become one of the most important pacers leading up to the 2023 World Cup. He became a critical cog in South Africa’s pace batteries during the World Cup by becoming South Africa’s second or third change bowler. He also became a shrewd operator in the middle overs by collecting over ten wickets between the 11th and 40th overs. During the World Cup, he achieved both of these success.

After the competition, he had taken 20 wickets in eight matches, making him the highest wicket-taker for South Africa. When he claimed his record 18th scalp in a group-stage match against Afghanistan, he also became the top wicket-taker for South Africa in a single edition of the World Cup. This accomplishment gave him the title of World Cup leader. Because he had such great achievements, many people referred to him as one of the breakout stars of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
As Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, looks to the Indian Premier League (IPL) to solidify selection for the Twenty20 World Cup, he will be paying careful attention to both Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee throughout this year’s cricket competition. Both Nortje and Coetzee are in the process of recovering from injuries that have kept them out of action for many months. It is anticipated that they will get playing experience during the Indian Premier League, which may be used to evaluate their preparation for a big event.
There are at least eight seam bowlers that South Africa might select in their 15-player touring party. Among them are Nortje and Coetzee. Other seam bowlers that South Africa could include in their touring party are Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Ottniel Baartman, and Lizaad Williams. After not playing for the first time since September 2023, when he participated in a home series against Australia, Nortje has only recently resumed his participation in the Twenty20 domestic competition of the CSA.
Due to the stress fracture that he sustained in his back, he was unable to participate in the One-Day International World Cup as well as the full home international summer. He began the bowling for Warriors in their return match against Kwa-Zulu Inland, and he bowled four frugal overs that cost only 12 runs. However, he did not take any wickets throughout his bowling.
As he continues to wait in South Africa for the birth of his first kid, which is about to come, there is a potential that he may also play a second match for the Warriors this coming Sunday. After that, Nortje will make his way to the Indian Premier League. Coetzee has already left for India, where he is now recuperating from a groin injury. He is currently under the supervision of the medical team of the Mumbai Indians franchise.
