Nicholas Pooran is a Trinidadian cricketer who was born on October 2, 1995. He is now a member of the West Indies cricket team, where he plays limited-overs cricket. In addition, he is an occasional captain of the limited-overs versions of the game. Not only does he play for Trinidad and Tobago in West Indian domestic matches, but he also plays for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. It was in September 2016 that he made his debut for the West Indies on the international stage.
When the West Indies squad competed in limited-overs cricket in May of 2022, Pooran was selected to serve as the team’s captain. His departure from his position as the limited overs captain of the West Indies squad occurred in November of 2022. Pooran, who was born in McBean, Couva, earned his education at Naparima College in San Fernando, where he participated in the school’s cricket squad.
His left-handed wicket-keeping and batting skills earned him the opportunity to represent Trinidad and Tobago in several underage and schoolboys events. At the age of 16, he made his debut for the national under-19 team in the regional tournament in 2012. In October of 2013, Pooran made his debut for the West Indies under-19 team, which was competing in a bilateral series against the Bangladesh under-19 team. He went on to participate in the Under-19 World Cup championship in 2014.
After six matches, he finished with 303 runs, placing him in fourth place for total runs and leading the West Indies in averages. He was the primary wicket-keeper for the squad and also served as the vice-captain. There were half-centuries scored against Canada and India, as well as an innings of 143 runs scored against Australia (from a team total of 208 all out). This innings was the highest score of the tournament, and it was later regarded as “one of the most memorable innings under pressure in the history of the tournament.”

The innings that Pooran played against Australia was the highest ever under-19 one-day international score, and the partnership that he had with Jerome Jones, a Barbadian, for the ninth wicket, which was 136 runs, set a record for all under-19 matches. Pooran had previously competed for Trinidad and Tobago in the local one-day Regional Super50 tournament in February and March of 2013, before joining the international under-19 team. He had played four matches for the team.
At the time of his selection for the Red Steel team, Trinidad’s CPL franchise, he was the youngest player in the tournament. This selection took place before the first season of the Caribbean Premier League in 2013. In his first game, which was played against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, he scored 54 runs off of 24 balls. His innings were praised for their “clean, calm stroke play” and “uninhibited aggression.” He also hit six sixes throughout his innings.
Pooran’s batting performance was less effective for the balance of the competition and also during the 2013 Champions League when he played for the Trinidad and Tobago national team rather than the Red Steel franchise. During the 2014 season of the Cricket Premier League, he once again played for the Red Steel, although he has not yet scored any further half-centuries.
During the 2014–15 season of the Regional Four Day Competition, Pooran made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago against the Leeward Islands in November of 2014. This match took place during the season. Before becoming one of Nikita Miller’s seven victims, he led the way in scoring with 55 runs in the second innings of Trinidad and Tobago’s match versus Jamaica, which was his second match. Pooran is a member of the Clarke Road basketball team, which competes in the Trinidadian competitions.

After that, Pooran was given the responsibility of leading the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the Super50 Cup for the 2022–2023 season. In the final match, he led the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to the position of eventual runners-up, which they achieved against the Jamaica Scorpions. The Mumbai Indians club purchased him for INR 30 lakhs in February 2017 for the 2017 Indian Premier League season; however, he did not participate in any of the matches throughout the whole season. Pooran was brought into Islamabad United’s roster to replace Ben Duckett, who was competing for England, in the Pakistan Super League in 2017. He played for Islamabad United throughout that season. Ahead of the playoffs, he became a member of the team.
The Kings XI Punjab paid 4.2 crore ($590,000) to acquire him at the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League. The auction took place in December of 2018.
