Rahul was selected to be a part of the India team that will go to the West Indies in July of 2016. It was during the second series test that Rahul achieved his best score in test cricket at the time, which was 158 runs. In September of 2016, he was selected to be a part of the team that will compete in the local series against New Zealand. As a result of an injury, Gautam Gambhir took over for him after the first Test match.
On the occasion of the 2016–17 Test series against England, Rahul was chosen to be a part of the team; however, he sustained an injury while practicing in the nets. Even though he was unable to participate in the third test, he was able to rejoin the squad for the fourth test, but he was unable to make a significant contribution. Rahul went on to get his fourth test ton, hitting 199 runs, which was a career-high. This occurred in the fifth and final test of the series.
The trip to Zimbabwe in 2016 included Rahul as a member of the team. The Harare Sports Club was the venue for his first One-Day International (ODI) match, which he played against Zimbabwe. As a result of Rahul’s debut, he became the first Indian cricketer to achieve a century in his maiden one-day international (ODI) match. He struck an undefeated 100* (115). He received the title of “man of the series.”
In the latter stages of the same tour, he made his debut in the Twenty20 International (T20I) format. As India’s maiden Twenty20 International (T20I) match against Zimbabwe was a loss, Rahul took a golden duck on his debut in the format. During the visit to the West Indies in 2016, Rahul was selected for the Twenty20 International team. During this trip, he scored his maiden century in Twenty20 International off of just 46 balls and ended up hitting an unbeaten 110 off of just 51 balls.
During the pursuit of the greatest Twenty20 International run chase at the time, which was 246 runs, he became the first player to achieve a century in a Twenty20 International while batting at number four. One run was all that separated India from victory in the match. By beating Ahmed Shehzad’s record of 76 innings, Rahul became the quickest batter to have scored hundreds in all three forms. This accomplishment occurred during Rahul’s 20th innings of international cricket.
