Starc was taken into the New South Wales team in February 2009 to replace Aaron Bird, who had been disqualified for possessing an improper bowling action. Starc had a rookie contract with New South Wales for the summer of 2008/2009, and he was brought in before Bird was suspended. It was on March 5, 2009, when New South Wales played Western Australia in their penultimate match of the season, that he made his debut in the first-class competition.
In the 2008–2009 Sheffield Shield season, New South Wales finished in last place on the ladder as a consequence of the match, which ended in a tie. At the beginning of the 2009–10 season, Western Australia made an effort to acquire Starc for their side. However, he was already under contract with New South Wales, so he decided to remain with them instead.
During the season, he participated in eight Sheffield Shield matches, during which he took 21 wickets, with a high of five wickets for seventy-four against Queensland, and he made a half-century against Victoria. In 2010, Starc was chosen to play for the Australian Institute of Sport, and his bowling was a significant factor in the team’s victory in the Emerging Players Twenty20 Trophy, which they won against teams from India, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Because of his outstanding performances over the winter of 2010, Starc was selected as a late substitute for Australia’s tour of India in late 2010. He took over for Josh Hazlewood, who was forced to withdraw due to an injury. As part of this tour, Starc made his debut on the international stage by participating in a One-Day International (ODI) match against India on October 20, 2010. Because he did not bat, he did not get any wickets.
Towards the end of the summer, Starc participated in his second one-day international, which was the last match of Australia’s three-match series against Sri Lanka. At that point, Sri Lanka had already won the series by their victory in the first two matches, which was their very first series victory in Australia. During Sri Lanka’s innings, Starc and fellow fast bowler Clint McKay claimed a combined total of nine wickets, which allowed Australia to secure an eight-wicket victory. Australia had been on a losing record of seven matches before to this victory.
