Shai Diego Hope is a Barbadian cricketer who was born on November 10, 1993. He now serves as a wicketkeeper and batsman for the squad that represents the West Indies in international cricket. In addition to that, he is the current captain of the Windies in one-day internationals. He was honored with the titles of Men’s Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year, and One-Day International Cricketer of the Year at the annual Cricket West Indies Awards ceremony, which took place in June 2018. His performance in one-day internationals earned him the title of CWI ODI Player of the Year the following year.
In the modern age of cricket, he is widely considered to be among the finest batsmen capable of playing in one-day internationals. Additionally, Hope has been considered for inclusion in the ICC One-Day International Team of the Year on two separate occasions, in the years 2020 and 2022. Under the direction of Alan Wells, a former captain of Sussex, Hope had her secondary education at Bedes Senior School, which is located in East Sussex, England.
While Hope was at Bede’s, he led the first eleven to the national twenty-over final, where he recorded a fifty-point score against Millfield in a match that they ultimately lost. Chiddingly Cricket Club, a small club in East Sussex, was where Hope spent a short period during the 2012 season. During that time, she averaged 46 runs per game and scored a season-high score of 61. At that time, he also contemplated staying in the United Kingdom to fulfill his goal of being eligible to play for the England cricket team.

According to Tony Cozier, a writer and analyst for West Indian cricket, Hope is “a stylish No. 3 batsman whose 211 for Barbados against Windward Islands cricket team was the tournament’s only double-hundred.” Hope’s performance stands out as the only double-hundred of the tournament. In 2017, he was an integral part of the Barbados squad that triumphed in the Regional Super50 competition. He got the Man of the Match award in both the semi-final and the final of the tournament, scoring a century in each of those matches.
Hope received the news in November 2019 that she will be playing for the Rangpur Rangers in the Bangladesh Premier League for the 2019–20 season. The Barbados Tridents announced in July 2020 that he would be a member of their team for the Caribbean Premier League in 2020. Hope took over as captain of the Barbados Pride for the 2021-22 Regional Super50 event on October 15, 2022, succeeding Jason Holder as the team’s captain.
After that, in April of the following year, Holder became a member of the English club Yorkshire for three matches during the 2023 season of the County Championship. While playing for the club for the first time, he scored 83 runs in the second innings of the game, which ultimately resulted in a defeat to Leicestershire. As a result of the severe weather, his second game for Yorkshire, which was against Gloucestershire, ended without a single ball being bowled.
The last match that Hope played for the team was against Sussex at Hove, where he hit an undefeated 53 in the second innings. The match ended in a tie. Hope made his first appearance in a test match on May 1, 2015, against England. The West Indies included him in their team for the upcoming test series against India, which took place in August 2016. Hope played his first One-Day International (ODI) match, which was the second match in the tri-series, against Sri Lanka.

His first one-day international century occurred in his second one-day international on the same tour, against Zimbabwe, when he hit 101 runs while chasing down 257 runs. His score did not influence the outcome of the game, which resulted in a draw. This is the 34th one-day international match that has finished in a tie, and it is the first one-day international encounter between the two sides. He was awarded the title of Man of the Match for his effort. During the second test match against England, which took place on August 25, 2017, Hope achieved his first-ever test century.
His partnership with Kraigg Brathwaite resulted in a total of 246 runs, which contributed to the West Indies reaching a total of 427. In the second innings, when West Indies were attempting to chase down 322 runs, Hope produced his second hundred and led them to a victory by five wickets. Additionally, Brathwaite and Hope contributed 144 runs to the total score during the second inning. Hope received the accolade for man of the match for his outstanding effort, which resulted in the West Indies achieving their first victory away from home against England since the year 2000.
Throughout the match against England, Hope scored two centuries, which was the first time that this particular achievement had been accomplished at Headingley Cricket Ground in the context of first-class cricket. His effort on the tour of England in 2017 was recognized in April of 2018 when he was selected as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year. The West Indies invited Hope to join their Twenty20 International (T20I) squad in December of 2017, just before the beginning of their series against New Zealand.
On December 29, 2017, he made his debut for the West Indies in a Twenty20 International match against New Zealand. In the first match of the 2019 Ireland Tri-Nation Series, which took place in May 2019, Hope participated in his fifty-first one-day international match. Through their combined efforts, Hope and John Campbell scored 365 runs for the first wicket in that encounter. Not only was it the first time that both openers for the West Indies had hit 150 runs separately in an ODI match, but it was also the highest opening partnership in the history of one-day internationals.
