Mario Saldaña was at the helm of the 1980 squad as its manager. A strike that affected the whole league forced an early end to the season, even though the team progressed despite losing its vital player, Héctor Espino. When the strike began, the Cachorros had a record of 43–53 in their last game. The National Association of Baseball Players (ANABE) was the organization responsible for organizing the strike that took place in 1980.
The Mexican League has kicked out the leaders and supporters of the ANABE organization. They had advocated for more compensation, improved contracts and benefits, retirement insurance, and other concessions, but the club owners hesitated to comply with their demands. In preparation for the 1981 season, ANABE established a league for striking players. Lechugueros de León was the group that represented León.
