Originally established in 1974, the franchise was first known as the Kansas City Scouts. It was named after the legendary Scouts who were instrumental in the opening of the American West in the 19th century. Following a period of two seasons in Kansas City, the club moved to Denver, Colorado, and in 1976, they changed their name to the Colorado Rockies because of their new home. Even though they had several good players, the Rockies were unable to create much of an impression in the National Hockey League on the ice.
In 1982, the club moved to New Jersey and settled in East Rutherford. They played their home games in the Brendan Byrne Arena, which eventually became the Continental Airlines Arena and then the Izod Center because of its name change. As a result of the transfer, a rebranding exercise was undertaken, and the club was dubbed the New Jersey Devils. This decision was motivated by the fabled monster known as the Jersey Devil, who claimed to live in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey.

Throughout the 1990s, the Devils were able to achieve a great deal of success because to the guidance of head coach Jacques Lemaire and general manager Lou Lamoriello. They won their first Stanley Cup in 1995, beating the Detroit Red Wings in a four-game series. This win earned them a reputation for their defensive strength and disciplined style of play, which contributed to their first Stanley Cup triumph. With this win, the Devils established themselves as a formidable opponent in the National Hockey League.
Throughout the latter part of the 1990s and into the 2000s, the Devils maintained their competitiveness, accomplishing many deep playoff runs and winning two more Stanley Cup wins in the years 2000 and 2003.
